Mobile Networks & Coverage in Bosnia and Herzegovina
e1sim Bosnia plans run on BH Telecom — the country's largest mobile operator, with 4G LTE coverage in Sarajevo, Mostar, Banja Luka, Tuzla, Zenica and along all main road corridors, including the scenic M-17 route down the Neretva valley from Sarajevo to Mostar and on toward the coast. Towns, ski resorts and the major tourist sights all have reliable signal.
Bosnia is a mountainous country — about 90% of its territory is highland — and coverage reflects that: valleys, towns and passes on main roads are well served, while remote hiking terrain in the Dinaric Alps (Sutjeska National Park, the Via Dinarica trail, Maglić approaches) can have gaps between villages. Download offline maps before multi-day treks; the Olympic ski resorts of Bjelašnica and Jahorina near Sarajevo have solid LTE.
Sarajevo, Mostar & the Herzegovina Heartland
Sarajevo is one of Europe's most fascinating capitals — the city where East literally meets West. Walk down Ferhadija street and a line on the pavement marks the "Sarajevo Meeting of Cultures": Ottoman bazaar lanes on one side, Austro-Hungarian boulevards on the other. Baščaršija, the 15th-century Ottoman old town, serves ćevapi and Bosnian coffee around the Sebilj fountain; minarets, Catholic and Orthodox cathedrals and a synagogue stand within a few hundred metres of each other. History is heavy here — the Latin Bridge where Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in 1914, the Tunnel of Hope under the airport runway that kept the city alive during the 1992–96 siege, and the "Sarajevo roses" — mortar scars in the pavement filled with red resin. The 1984 Winter Olympics bobsled track on Trebević mountain, reachable by cable car, is now a graffiti-covered hiking landmark.
Mostar is Herzegovina's jewel: the Stari Most, a 16th-century Ottoman bridge arcing 24 metres above the emerald Neretva river, destroyed in 1993 and rebuilt stone by stone into a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Local divers still leap from its parapet as they have for centuries — tip them and they jump. The cobbled old bazaar of Kujundžiluk frames the bridge with copper workshops and river-terrace restaurants. Within an hour of Mostar: the dervish monastery of Blagaj tucked under a cliff at the source of the Buna river, the fortified hill town of Počitelj, and Kravice waterfalls — a 25-metre travertine cascade where you can swim in summer.
Beyond the classics, Bosnia rewards the curious: Travnik's Ottoman fortress and plava voda springs, Jajce with its 17-metre waterfall in the town centre, the white fortress above Počitelj, and Herzegovina's up-and-coming wine roads around Trebinje in the far south, an easy day trip from Dubrovnik. Prices remain among the lowest in Europe — Bosnia is arguably the continent's best-value destination.
eSIM vs Roaming in Bosnia and Herzegovina
Bosnia and Herzegovina is not an EU member — EU "Roam Like at Home" does not apply here, and it is a classic roaming trap on Balkan road trips: cross from EU Croatia and your phone can silently switch to Bosnian roaming at €5–12 per day or punishing per-megabyte rates. A prepaid e1sim plan from around €3 removes the risk entirely.
Local SIM cards require passport registration at an operator shop, and on a typical Balkan itinerary — Dubrovnik to Mostar to Sarajevo in two days — nobody wants to spend holiday time queueing at a telecom office. With an eSIM you buy online, scan the QR from your email and have data before the border crossing. Plans are data-only; calls run over WhatsApp and Viber, the latter being Bosnia's messenger of choice for guesthouses and drivers.
