Mobile Networks & Coverage in Colombia

e1sim Colombia plans run on TIGO (Colombia Móvil) and Claro — two of the country's three national operators, including Claro's network, the largest in Colombia. 4G LTE covers Bogotá, Medellín, Cartagena, Cali, Santa Marta, Bucaramanga and effectively every city and town on the tourist map, plus the main highways between them. The network for each plan is shown on the card before purchase.

Colombia is vast — Andes, Amazon, two coastlines — and coverage follows the people: the coffee axis towns (Salento, Filandia, Manizales), the Caribbean coast from Cartagena to Palomino and the Guajira gateway of Riohacha are all well served. Expect dead zones on multi-day treks — the Lost City trail in the Sierra Nevada, Cocora's higher ridges — and in Amazon lodges around Leticia, where satellite Wi-Fi fills the gap. Download offline maps before trekking.

Cartagena, Medellín & the Coffee Axis — the Comeback Story of the Americas

Cartagena de Indias is the Caribbean's most beautiful colonial city — a UNESCO-listed walled town of bougainvillea balconies, pastel façades and plazas where palenqueras in bright dresses sell fruit against 400-year-old ramparts built to guard Spain's treasure fleets. Evenings belong to the wall itself: sunset at Café del Mar, then salsa in Getsemaní, the once-rough barrio turned street-art quarter that out-charms the old town itself. From the bay, boats run to the Rosario Islands' turquoise shallows and the mangrove lagoons of Barú.

Medellín is the great urban comeback story of the Americas. The "City of Eternal Spring" turned its steepest, toughest hillsides into showcases: the Metrocable gondolas lift commuters and travellers alike over Comuna 13, where escalators, murals and hip-hop tours now draw the crowds that headlines once scared away. Botero's corpulent bronzes fill Plaza Botero downtown; Guatapé, two hours east, pairs a lake-maze panorama from the 740 steps of El Peñol rock with the most colourfully painted town in Colombia. An hour's flight south, the Coffee Axis (Eje Cafetero, UNESCO World Heritage) is Colombia at its most postcard: wax palms towering 60 metres over the Cocora Valley, coffee fincas offering bean-to-cup tours around Salento and Filandia, and hummingbird gardens in every shade of green.

Bogotá, the Andean capital at 2,640 metres, anchors the culture: the Gold Museum's 34,000 pre-Columbian pieces (including the raft that sparked the El Dorado legend), colonial La Candelaria's graffiti-lined lanes, and the Monserrate funicular rising above a city of eight million. The Caribbean coast east of Cartagena runs wilder — Tayrona National Park's jungle-backed beaches, the trek to the Lost City (Ciudad Perdida, older than Machu Picchu), and kitesurf-blasted Cabo de la Vela in the Guajira desert. And in the far south-west, the Tatacoa desert and the archaeological parks of San Agustín reward those going beyond the highlights. Colombia's own slogan says it best: the only risk is wanting to stay.

eSIM vs Roaming in Colombia

South American roaming is brutal on Western carriers — €8–15 per day or predatory per-megabyte rates are standard for Colombia, and EU "Roam Like at Home" means nothing here. A prepaid e1sim plan costs a fraction of a single roaming day and activates by QR before you land in Bogotá, Medellín or Cartagena.

Local SIM cards require passport registration at an operator store, and street-corner SIM sellers are a lottery. An eSIM skips both: buy online, scan the QR from your email, and you are connected at the arrivals hall. Plans are data-only — calls run over WhatsApp, which is how all of Colombia communicates: hotels, taxi drivers, tour agencies and half the country's commerce live on WhatsApp.
