Mobile Networks & Coverage in Honduras

Honduras has two principal mobile network operators: Claro Honduras and Tigo Honduras, which together serve the country's approximately 10.5 million inhabitants. Our eSIM connects to Claro Honduras, which provides 4G LTE coverage across the main urban centres and tourist destinations. In Tegucigalpa, the capital city set in a mountain valley, 4G is widely available throughout the central districts, the Colonia Palmira neighbourhood, and the international airport zone. San Pedro Sula in the north — the country's industrial capital and gateway to the Caribbean coast — also enjoys solid 4G coverage. The Bay Islands (Islas de la Bahía) — Roatán, Utila, and Guanaja — are internationally famous for world-class diving and snorkelling, and all three have improved 4G coverage in their main settlements; Coxen Hole and West End on Roatán have reliable signal, while Utila Town has good connectivity as well. In the interior highland departments and the Copán archaeological zone, 4G coverage is available in Copán Ruinas town but may be 3G or spotty on the trails. The Mosquito Coast (La Mosquitia) in the far northeast is extremely remote with minimal mobile coverage.

For visits to Copán ruins, the Pico Bonito National Park, Celaque National Park, or the remote interior of the country, downloading offline maps before travel is highly recommended. Guatemala border zones and the inland mountain roads often have weak or no data signal.

The Bay Islands & Honduras's Mayan Heritage

Honduras, officially the Republic of Honduras, is a Central American nation bordered by Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, the Caribbean Sea to the north, and the Pacific Gulf of Fonseca to the south. With a population of approximately 10.5 million and a territory of 112,492 km², Honduras is the second-largest country in Central America. The capital, Tegucigalpa — a name of indigenous origin meaning "silver mountain" — is a sprawling city of over 1.4 million set in a valley ringed by forested hills. The National Monument to Peace (El Picacho) and the historical Basilica of Suyapa attract visitors, while the vibrant capital scene offers excellent local cuisine and the natural wonder of the Uyuca Cloud Forest just outside the city. San Pedro Sula, despite its reputation, is a major commercial and transport hub with a growing tourist infrastructure and proximity to spectacular nature.

The jewel of Honduran tourism is undeniably Roatán — the largest of the Bay Islands, situated in the Caribbean Sea approximately 65 kilometres off the northern coast. Roatán is home to one of the most accessible sections of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second-largest coral reef system in the world, making it a paradise for divers and snorkellers of all levels. The reef's warm, clear waters harbour an extraordinary variety of marine life: whale sharks, eagle rays, moray eels, sea turtles, and hundreds of coral and fish species. Utila, smaller and more budget-focused, is world-renowned as one of the cheapest places on earth to get PADI open water diver certification. Guanaja, the easternmost Bay Island, is the least developed and most naturally pristine of the three, with crystal-clear water and a rainforest interior. All three islands are accessible by ferry from La Ceiba on the mainland.

Inland Honduras holds some of Central America's most remarkable archaeological and natural treasures. Copán is the southernmost of the great Maya cities, located near the Guatemalan border in the western highlands, and is celebrated for its extraordinary sculptural art — its hieroglyphic stairway is the longest known Maya inscription in existence. The Copán Ruinas town is a charming base for exploring the ruins and the nearby hot springs. Further north, the Lancetilla Botanical Garden near Tela is one of the oldest and largest in the Western Hemisphere, while Pico Bonito National Park near La Ceiba protects one of Honduras's richest biodiversity zones, with over 400 bird species including numerous endemic and migratory species.

eSIM vs Roaming in Honduras

Honduras is outside the EU roaming zone, and standard European and North American roaming plans apply international surcharges. With growing tourism to the Bay Islands and Copán, travellers need reliable data for navigation, reef site information, and communication. A Honduras eSIM from €6.66 provides affordable 4G prepaid data on Claro's network — far less expensive than most roaming packages for a Caribbean/Central America destination.

Our Honduras eSIM activates via a QR code sent instantly by email, so you can land at Toncontín International Airport (TGU) or Juan Manuel Gálvez International Airport (RTB) in Roatán with data ready to go. Keep your primary SIM active for calls home while navigating Honduran roads and reefs on your eSIM data plan.
