Winter flips the same town into a freeride ski hub at a fraction of alpine prices.

South, near Kazarman, the petroglyph fields of Saimaluu-Tash hold ten thousand carvings; toward China, Tash Rabat — a 15th-century stone caravanserai at 3,200 metres — still guards the old Silk Road pass.

Cities bookend the wilderness. Bishkek is leafy, low-key and Soviet-boned — Ala-Too Square, Osh Bazaar and the best coffee scene in Central Asia — with Ala-Archa National Park's glacier valley only 40 minutes away. Osh, the 3,000-year-old southern capital, wraps around Sulaiman-Too, the sacred UNESCO-listed mountain rising straight from the bazaar, where the Fergana Valley's melons and silks have been traded since Babur's time. Between them runs one of the world's great road trips over 3,000-metre passes — and for the truly ambitious, the base camps of Peak Lenin (7,134 m) accept visitors happy to just look up.
