Mobile Networks & Coverage in Luxembourg

e1sim Luxembourg plans run on Orange Luxembourg — one of the Grand Duchy's three national operators, with 4G LTE blanketing a country you can drive across in under an hour. Luxembourg City, Esch-sur-Alzette, Vianden, Echternach, the Moselle wine villages and every motorway to the French, German and Belgian borders sit under continuous, fast coverage.

This is one of the wealthiest and best-wired countries on earth, so dead zones essentially do not exist — even hiking the sandstone gorges of the Mullerthal or cycling the Moselle towpath keeps a solid signal. The only note for travellers: near the borders your phone may hop onto French, German or Belgian networks; a Luxembourg plan with network selection locked keeps billing predictable.

Luxembourg City, Vianden & the Mullerthal — a Grand Duchy in Miniature

Luxembourg City is one of Europe's most dramatic capitals — a UNESCO-listed old town perched on sheer sandstone cliffs above two river valleys, stitched together by viaducts, lifts and the Chemin de la Corniche, fairly billed as "Europe's most beautiful balcony". Below the ramparts wind the Casemates du Bock: 17 kilometres of tunnels carved into the rock over centuries of sieges, which once earned the city the nickname "Gibraltar of the North". Down in the Grund quarter, riverside houses and abbey walls make the postcard; up top, the Kirchberg plateau counters with EU institutions, Pei-designed art at Mudam and the philharmonic's white colonnade. Bonus for travellers: all public transport in the entire country — trams, trains, buses — has been free since 2020, a world first.

Beyond the capital, castles crowd a country only 82 kilometres long. Vianden is the showstopper — a full Hohenstaufen castle restored to fairy-tale condition above a loop of the Our river, reached by Luxembourg's only chairlift and once sketched by Victor Hugo from his exile house across the bridge. The Valley of the Seven Castles strings Mersch, Hollenfels and Bourglinster along one lazy drive, while Beaufort pairs a Renaissance château with a ruined medieval one next door. In the east, Echternach — the country's oldest town — wraps a basilica and a benedictine abbey around a dancing procession so old UNESCO lists it as intangible heritage.

Nature fills the gaps between castles. The Mullerthal — "Luxembourg's Little Switzerland" — hides mossy sandstone canyons, split rocks and the Schiessentümpel waterfall under beech forest, threaded by a 112-kilometre trail rated among Europe's best hikes. The Moselle valley pours crémant and riesling in cellar tastings from Schengen (yes, that Schengen — the agreement was signed on a boat here) to Grevenmacher. And the red-earth south, the Minett, converts blast furnaces into a UNESCO-listed science city at Belval, where you sip coffee beneath a preserved steel mill. Few countries pack this much into 2,586 square kilometres — and with Luxembourg's central location, Trier, Metz and the Ardennes are all day trips.

eSIM vs Roaming in Luxembourg

Luxembourg is an EU member, so EU and EEA residents roam here under "Roam Like at Home" using their domestic allowance. Everyone else — UK, US, Canadian, Australian and Asian travellers — typically pays €5–12 per day for roaming, against an e1sim prepaid plan starting under two euros with unlimited options available.

With an eSIM there is no store visit: buy online, scan the QR from your email, and data works when you land at Findel or roll in by train from Brussels, Paris or Frankfurt. Plans are data-only — calls run over WhatsApp — and since the whole country's public transport is free, your data plan may genuinely be the only travel expense inside Luxembourg.
