Ohrid is the reason most travellers come. Lake Ohrid is one of the oldest and deepest lakes in Europe — over a million years old, home to species found nowhere else — and the town above it is a rare double UNESCO World Heritage Site, honoured for both nature and culture. Medieval Ohrid once had 365 churches, "one for every day of the year"; the postcard icon is the Church of St John at Kaneo, perched on a cliff over impossibly clear water. Wander the cobbled old town past the ancient theatre and Samuel's Fortress, swim from rocky beaches, then take a boat to the Bay of Bones — a reconstructed prehistoric pile-dwelling settlement — or the monastery of St Naum by the Albanian border, where springs feed the lake through gardens patrolled by peacocks.

Bitola, the country's elegant second city near the Greek border, grew rich as a consular town of the late Ottoman era — its Širok Sokak promenade is still lined with 19th-century façades and pavement cafés. On the edge of town lie the ruins of Heraclea Lyncestis, founded by Philip II of Macedon, with some of the best-preserved floor mosaics in the Balkans. Wine lovers should detour through the Tikveš region around Kavadarci — the largest wine area in the southern Balkans, with cellar-door tastings at a fraction of Western prices.
