Mobile Networks & Coverage in Moldova

Moldova has a well-developed mobile network for its size, with three main operators: Orange Moldova, Moldtelecom (Unite), and Moldcell. Our eSIM connects to Orange Moldova, the country's leading network by coverage and subscriber numbers, providing 4G LTE across Chișinău and all major towns. In Chișinău, the capital, 4G is available throughout the city — from the central Stefan cel Mare boulevard and the market areas to the suburbs and Chișinău International Airport. Secondary cities like Bălți in the north, Orhei, Ungheni, Soroca, and Cahul in the south all have 4G coverage from Orange Moldova. Even smaller towns and the rural wine-producing villages of Cricova, Milestii Mici, and Purcari have reasonable 3G-to-4G connectivity. The Orheiul Vechi cave monastery area — one of Moldova's top tourist attractions — has mobile signal in the main access area. The Gagauzia autonomous region (Comrat) and the Transnistria breakaway region along the eastern border present more complex coverage situations; Transnistria technically uses separate infrastructure, but most visitors experience reasonable connectivity in Tiraspol. Overall, Moldova's coverage is quite good for a country its size, making it easy to stay connected throughout a visit.

Given Moldova's small size (33,846 km²) and good network coverage, offline maps are not a primary concern, but downloading an offline map of the Orheiul Vechi area and the wine route villages can be helpful for day trips.

Chișinău, Wine Culture & Moldova's Quiet Charms

Moldova, officially the Republic of Moldova, is a small landlocked country in Eastern Europe, bordered by Romania to the west and Ukraine to the north, east, and south. With a population of approximately 2.6 million (the state territory excluding Transnistria) and an area of 33,846 km², Moldova is one of Europe's smallest and least-visited countries — a fact that makes it a genuine off-the-beaten-path discovery for adventurous travellers. The country gained independence from the Soviet Union on 27 August 1991. Despite being one of Europe's poorest countries by GDP, Moldova has a rich cultural heritage, a remarkably gentle and welcoming character, and one of Europe's most extraordinary wine cultures. Chișinău (pronounced KISH-i-now), the capital, is a leafy, low-rise city of broad Soviet-era boulevards, fine parks, and a reviving arts and café scene anchored by the pedestrian zone around Piața Marii Adunări Naționale.

Moldova is arguably Europe's great undiscovered wine destination. The country's wine production dates back over 5,000 years, making it one of the oldest winemaking regions in the world, and the climate in the Codru, Ștefan Vodă, and Valul lui Traian wine regions is ideal for producing elegant reds and whites. Cricova winery, located in a town of the same name just 15 km from Chișinău, is one of Europe's most extraordinary wine experiences: an underground city of wine tunnels stretching over 120 km, storing millions of bottles of wine in optimal conditions. The collection includes wines dating back to 1902 and legendary bottles seized from Hermann Göring's private collection during WWII. Milestii Mici, further south, holds the Guinness World Record for the world's largest wine collection by number of bottles (over 2 million). The Purcari Estate in the Stefan Vodă region, established in 1827, is Moldova's most internationally acclaimed winery, particularly famous for its Negru de Purcari blend.

Orheiul Vechi (Old Orhei), a 45-minute drive north of Chișinău, is Moldova's most spectacular heritage site: a complex of cave monasteries carved into limestone cliffs above the Răut River, used by Orthodox monks since the 13th century and still inhabited by a small monastic community today. The surrounding landscape — dramatic limestone escarpments, ancient fortifications, and traditional Moldovan villages — is one of the most beautiful in Eastern Europe. Soroca in the north is famous for its unique Roma (Romani) Gypsy Hill neighbourhood, where wealthy Roma families have built an extraordinary collection of extravagant mansion-style houses, each more elaborate than the last, creating one of Europe's most unusual architectural landscapes. The Tipova cave monastery, cut into cliffs above the Dniester River, and the medieval Soroca Fortress offer further heritage experiences.

eSIM vs Roaming in Moldova

Moldova is not part of the EU, and EU roaming rules do not apply here. Despite its proximity to Romania (an EU member), travellers from EU countries will typically find their carriers apply international roaming rates in Moldova. A Moldova eSIM from just €1.85 on Orange's 4G network is exceptionally affordable for what may be a 3-5 day visit to the capital, wineries, and heritage sites. It's one of the best value eSIMs in Europe for what you get.

Our Moldova eSIM activates via QR code sent instantly to your email — no need to find an Orange store in Chișinău city centre. Your home SIM stays active for calls and incoming texts while you navigate Moldova's wine routes, cave monasteries, and leafy capital boulevards using your eSIM data plan.
