The Emerald Isle & the Soufrière Hills Volcano

Montserrat, officially the British Overseas Territory of Montserrat, is a small Caribbean island of 102 km² located between Antigua and Guadeloupe in the Leeward Islands. Often called the "Emerald Isle of the Caribbean" — a nickname earned through its disproportionate population of Irish descent (descendants of Irish indentured servants and colonists from the 17th century) and its shamrock-shaped hills — Montserrat is unique in the Caribbean for the depth of its Irish cultural connections. The island was an early Irish settlement from the 1630s onwards, and St. Patrick's Day (17 March) is one of only two places in the world (Ireland being the other) where it is a public holiday. The Montserrat Cultural Centre and the Montserrat National Museum in Brades preserve the island's extraordinary Irish-Caribbean heritage.

Montserrat became internationally known after a catastrophic series of volcanic eruptions from the Soufrière Hills Volcano beginning in 1995. By 1997, the eruptions had buried the capital Plymouth under metres of volcanic ash and pyroclastic deposits, forced the evacuation of two-thirds of the island's population, and created a permanent exclusion zone over the entire southern half of the island. Plymouth is now the world's only capital city that has been entirely abandoned due to a natural disaster, preserved under ash and visible from designated safe viewing areas on the hills above. The volcano, still intermittently active, has paradoxically created Montserrat's greatest tourist attraction: the unearthly landscape of buried buildings, vegetation, and the eerie preserved ruins of a lost city make a visit to the viewing areas one of the Caribbean's most compelling and unusual experiences.

The northern part of the island, spared from the volcanic destruction, retains Montserrat's lush, jungle-covered hills, dramatic sea cliffs, and black sand beaches. The island is also famous in music: Sir George Martin (producer of the Beatles) built the AIR Studios Montserrat here in 1979, recording albums by artists including Paul McCartney, Elton John, the Rolling Stones, Sting, and Duran Duran before it was destroyed in 1989 by Hurricane Hugo. The story is documented in the film "Under the Volcano" and the AIR Studios legacy lives on in Montserrat's annual music festival. Little Bay, under development as the island's new capital, features new waterfront infrastructure and a newly constructed ferry terminal providing connections to Antigua.
