Mobile Networks & Coverage in Panama

Panama has several mobile network operators including Claro Panama, Digicel Panama, Movistar (Telefonica Panama), and Tigo. Our eSIM connects to Telefonica Panama (Movistar), providing solid 4G LTE coverage across Panama City and major urban areas. Panama City — the gleaming financial capital with its dramatic skyline of skyscrapers — has excellent 4G coverage throughout, from the ultramodern Cinta Costera waterfront and the Miraflores Locks visitor centre to the colonial Casco Viejo (UNESCO World Heritage Site) and Tocumen International Airport. Colón on the Caribbean coast, and David in Chiriquí Province (gateway to the highlands and Volcán Barú), have good urban 4G. The Chiriquí Highlands around Boquete — famous for coffee and outdoor adventures — have reasonable connectivity in town. The San Blas (Guna Yala) archipelago on the Caribbean side has very limited connectivity on most islands, with better signal near Colon. The Darién Gap in the east — one of the world's most impenetrable jungle regions and the famous break in the Pan-American Highway — has essentially no mobile coverage. Bocas del Toro on the Caribbean coast has improving 4G coverage in Bocas Town.

Downloading offline maps is essential for the Darién, the San Blas Islands, and hiking in the Chiriquí highlands. Google Maps and Maps.me both provide good offline coverage of Panama's main destinations.

The Panama Canal, Casco Viejo & Panama's Natural Wonders

Panama, officially the Republic of Panama, is a country in Central America at the narrowest point of the continent, bordered by Costa Rica to the west and Colombia to the east, with the Caribbean Sea to the north and the Pacific Ocean to the south. With a population of approximately 4.4 million and a territory of 75,417 km², Panama is best known internationally for the Panama Canal — one of the most important waterways in the world, connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans through 82 kilometres of lakes, locks, and channels. The canal handles approximately 14,000 ships per year, carrying about 5% of the world's maritime trade. The Miraflores Locks Visitor Centre near Panama City is one of the country's most visited attractions, with daily exhibitions and live ship transits. The canal was constructed by the United States between 1904 and 1914 (building on a failed French attempt begun in 1880) and was transferred to Panamanian sovereignty on 31 December 1999. The expanded canal, featuring new Neopanamax locks, was inaugurated in June 2016 and can accommodate the world's largest container ships.

Panama City is a fascinating juxtaposition of old and new. The Casco Viejo (Casco Antiguo) — the old walled colonial city founded in 1673 after the original Panama City (known as Panama Viejo) was sacked by buccaneer Henry Morgan — is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of Spanish colonial plazas, crumbling baroque churches, and lovingly restored mansions that now house boutique hotels, excellent restaurants, and a vibrant arts scene. The ruins of Panama Viejo, founded in 1519 as the first European settlement on the Pacific coast of the Americas, are nearby and are also UNESCO-listed. Panama City's modern skyline — visible from Casco Viejo — features some of Latin America's most ambitious skyscraper architecture, reflecting the country's status as a regional financial and logistics hub.

Panama's natural biodiversity is extraordinary given its position as a land bridge between North and South America. The country has more bird species than the entire continental United States and Canada combined (over 970 species), making it one of the world's premier birdwatching destinations. Parque Nacional Soberanía, just 25 km from Panama City along the Canal Zone, is one of the most accessible tropical forests in the world and a superb birding site. Volcán Barú (3,474 m) in the Chiriquí highlands is Panama's highest peak and the only place in the country from which both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans can be seen simultaneously on a clear day. The Chiriquí Highlands around Boquete are famous for award-winning arabica coffee, white-water rafting on the Chiriquí River, and the annual Boquete Jazz & Blues Festival. The San Blas (Guna Yala) archipelago — comprising 365 islands and cays off the Caribbean coast, home to the autonomous Guna people — is one of the most pristine and culturally authentic indigenous territories in the Americas, with extraordinary snorkelling and sailing.

eSIM vs Roaming in Panama

Panama is outside the EU roaming zone, and standard European and North American roaming packages apply international surcharges. Panama's status as a major financial and transit hub means many business travellers need reliable connectivity, and a Panama eSIM from €6.36 on Telefonica's 4G network provides affordable, predictable data for both business and leisure visits.

Our Panama eSIM activates via QR code sent instantly to your email — arrive at Tocumen International Airport already connected to Movistar's network. Your home SIM stays active for calls while you navigate Panama's modern skyline, colonial history, and spectacular natural environments.
