Machu Picchu needs no introduction — the 15th-century citadel the Spanish never found, saddled between jungle peaks at 2,430 metres, is the most breathtaking archaeological site in the hemisphere. See it right: sunrise through the Sun Gate if you hiked the Inca Trail, or the first buses from Aguas Calientes for the classic postcard from the guardhouse; add the vertiginous Huayna Picchu climb (book weeks ahead) for the condor's-eye view. The four-day Inca Trail remains the world's most famous trek — permits sell out months in advance — while the Salkantay route trades crowds for a 4,630-metre pass under a sacred glacier.

Cusco, the former Inca capital and gateway to it all, is a destination in its own right: Qorikancha — the Sun Temple whose gold-sheeted walls the conquistadors stripped — still anchors a colonial church; the fortress of Sacsayhuamán flexes 100-tonne stones fitted without mortar; and the San Blas quarter pours artisan coffee at 3,400 metres (acclimatise slowly, coca tea helps). The Sacred Valley unfurls below: Pisac's hilltop citadel and artisan market, Ollantaytambo's living Inca town where water still runs in 500-year-old channels, Moray's crop-laboratory terraces and the blinding salt pans of Maras — thousands of pools mined since Inca times. South-east, the Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) day trip climbs past alpacas to painted mineral ridges at 5,036 metres.

The rest of Peru could fill a second trip. Arequipa, the white volcanic-stone city under El Misti, serves the country's best food scene outside Lima and opens the Colca Canyon, twice the Grand Canyon's depth, where Andean condors ride the morning thermals close enough to hear. Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake on earth, floats the Uros reed islands and the homestay island of Taquile. Lima itself has become South America's culinary capital — ceviche temples and three restaurants routinely in the world's top ten — with pre-Columbian gold at the Larco Museum. Add the Nazca Lines etched into the desert, the Ballestas Islands' sea-lion colonies, and the Amazon at Tambopata, and Peru justifies every superlative.

eSIM vs Roaming in Peru

Peru is a classic roaming trap: Western carriers charge €8–15 per day or savage per-megabyte rates, and EU "Roam Like at Home" does not apply. A prepaid e1sim plan from under €5 beats a single day of roaming — and on a two-week Peru itinerary the difference funds a decent ceviche crawl in Lima.
