An hour north, Novi Sad pairs the Petrovaradin fortress — "Gibraltar on the Danube", home of the EXIT festival every July — with an elegant Habsburg centre and the wine cellars of Sremski Karlovci nearby. Eastward, the Danube squeezes through the Iron Gates: the Golubac fortress rises straight from the water, and the giant rock-carved face of Decebalus marks the Romanian side. Southwest lie the mountains — Zlatibor's meadows, Kopaonik's ski slopes, and Mokra Gora, where the Šargan Eight narrow-gauge railway loops through the hills beside Emir Kusturica's timber ethno-village, Drvengrad. Add the Uvac canyon's hairpin meanders patrolled by griffon vultures and the Studenica and Žiča monasteries' medieval frescoes, and Serbia rewards far more days than most travellers give it.
