Baku — Where the Caspian Sea Meets Futuristic Architecture

Baku is one of the most architecturally surprising cities in the world — a place where a UNESCO-listed medieval fortress city sits in the shadow of three flame-shaped skyscrapers that glow in shifting red, orange and white light after dark. The Flame Towers (Alov Qüllələri) have become the symbol of modern Azerbaijan: three tapered glass towers rising 182 metres above the city, their LED facades visible from almost every point in Baku, programmed to simulate a giant fire burning on the hillside. At their feet, the Palace of the Shirvanshahs — a 15th-century royal complex of domed halls and a royal mausoleum — and the mysterious Maiden Tower, a 29-metre cylindrical fortification of uncertain purpose and date (possibly Zoroastrian, possibly pre-Islamic), together form the Icherisheher UNESCO World Heritage Site, the walled Inner City where Baku was born.

The Heydar Aliyev Center, designed by Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid and completed in 2012, is the other architectural icon: an undulating white form of continuous curves with no straight lines or sharp angles, flowing from the ground into a sweeping roof that enfolds the building like a wave frozen in space. The interior houses a museum of Azerbaijani history, a gallery and a congress hall; the exterior is a favourite backdrop for photographers at every hour of the day. The 11-kilometre Baku Boulevard (Bulvar), stretching along the Caspian waterfront, is the city's elegant promenade — lined with cafes, a Ferris wheel, the Venice-themed canal section and views across the inland sea towards the horizon.

The Caspian Sea, despite being landlocked, is a genuine summer destination. Baku's beaches on the Absheron Peninsula — particularly the resort areas of Novkhani, Nardaran and Bilgah — warm to 24–28°C in July and August, and the calm, shallow Caspian makes for easy, safe swimming. The sea has no tides and very low salinity; its water is famously buoyant. Baku's summer climate (July average 32°C, reliably sunny) is warm and breezy — the city is known as the "City of Winds" (Bädkubə in Azerbaijani) for the constant Caspian breeze that keeps the heat manageable.

Ancient Mountain Settlements — Sheki, Lagich & Caucasus Villages

Sheki, four hours west of Baku in the foothills of the Greater Caucasus, is Azerbaijan's most beautiful historic town and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2019. Its centrepiece is the Khan's Palace (Xan Sarayı): a two-storey summer residence of the 18th-century Sheki Khanate, decorated entirely in shebeke — an extraordinary tradition of stained-glass latticework assembled without nails or glue from thousands of tiny pieces of coloured glass and walnut wood, lit from inside to glow like a lantern. The surrounding Old City walls, caravanserai (a 400-year-old khan, now a boutique hotel and restaurant) and the smell of pakhlava pastry from the street bakeries make Sheki feel like a living fragment of the Silk Road.

Lagich is a small mountain village in the Ismailli district, accessible by a winding road through forested gorges, that has been famous for centuries for its coppersmiths. The village's single main street is lined with workshops where craftsmen still hammer, engrave and polish hand-made copper vessels, trays, pitchers and jewellery using techniques passed down through generations over a thousand years. Lagich is also home to distinctive carpet-weaving and leatherwork traditions; the village itself is a protected historical monument, its stone houses and cobblestone lanes virtually unchanged. A half-day trip from Baku, it rewards travellers who want to step off the tourist circuit entirely.

The Gobustan State Reserve, 60 kilometres south of Baku on the way to the Caspian coast, contains over 6,000 rock carvings (petroglyphs) dating from 5,000 to 40,000 years ago — a UNESCO World Heritage Site that traces the region's human history from the Stone Age to the medieval period. Nearby, the Gobustan mud volcanoes are one of Azerbaijan's strangest natural phenomena: Azerbaijan has the highest concentration of mud volcanoes on earth, and the grey bubbling cones of the Gobustan plateau — some only knee-height, others belching metre-high plumes of methane-rich mud — look like a landscape from another planet.
