From town, boat trips reach the floating villages of the Tonlé Sap, the great lake that swells five-fold each monsoon and feeds half the country. Phnom Penh, the capital, is intense and rewarding: the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda gleam by the riverfront, while Tuol Sleng and the Choeung Ek killing fields bear necessary witness to the Khmer Rouge years — heavy, unmissable history told with dignity.

The south coast is Cambodia decompressing. Kampot is all riverside guesthouses, French shophouses and pepper farms — Kampot pepper carries protected-origin status like Champagne, and plantation tours end in tastings. Neighbouring Kep, the 1960s jet-set resort, serves its famous blue crab with that same pepper at the crab market. Offshore, Koh Rong and Koh Rong Samloem deliver the castaway fantasy: bioluminescent plankton after dark, white-sand bays, and just enough beach-bar infrastructure. Between coast and capital, Battambang offers colonial streets, the bamboo train and a bat cave that empties in a living river of millions at dusk.
