The Hunza Valley, with its apple and apricot orchards framed by the snow-capped Rakaposhi, is one of the most photographed landscapes in Asia. The Karakoram Highway (KKH) between Islamabad and Kashgar in China — carved through some of the world's highest mountains — is one of the engineering marvels of the 20th century and one of the world's highest paved roads. Fairy Meadows, a mountain plateau below Nanga Parbat (the world's ninth-highest peak, sometimes called the Killer Mountain), offers accessible trekking with extraordinary views. The ancient Silk Road city of Taxila, with its extraordinary Gandharan Buddhist ruins, is another UNESCO Heritage site close to Islamabad.
