Macao, officially the Macao Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, is a tiny peninsula and two islands — Taipa and Coloane (now largely merged into the Cotai reclamation) — with a total area of about 32 km² and a population of around 680,000. Macao was a Portuguese colony and trade port from 1557 until 1999, when sovereignty was transferred to the People's Republic of China, making it one of the last European colonial territories in Asia. This 442-year Portuguese presence left an extraordinary cultural legacy: the Historic Centre of Macao, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005, contains 22 individual monuments and eight public squares blending Portuguese Baroque architecture with Chinese temples, colonial administrative buildings, and traditional Cantonese shophouses in a remarkably harmonious urban tapestry unlike anywhere else in Asia. The Ruins of St. Paul's (Ruínas de São Paulo) — the ornate stone façade of a 17th-century Jesuit church, all that remains after a catastrophic fire — is Macao's most iconic landmark, depicted on countless souvenirs and widely reproduced as a symbol of the territory.

The Senado Square (Largo do Senado), with its wave-patterned Portuguese mosaic pavement and Italianate-style civic buildings, is the heart of old Macao and one of Asia's most photographed public spaces. Nearby, the A-Ma Temple (completed around 1488) is one of the oldest Chinese temples in Macao and the origin of the name "Macao" itself (from the Cantonese "A-Ma-Gao," meaning Bay of A-Ma). The Monte Fort, perched on a hill above the historic centre, provides panoramic views over the Macao Peninsula and the Pearl River Delta estuary. The Macao Museum, housed within the fort, presents the territory's Portuguese-Chinese history in detail. The Mandarin's House (Casa do Mandarim), the ancestral home of Zheng Guanying, is one of the most remarkable examples of blended Sino-Portuguese domestic architecture on the peninsula.

The Cotai Strip, conceived as Macao's answer to the Las Vegas Strip, has transformed the formerly shallow tidal flats between Taipa and Coloane into one of the world's largest resort complexes. The Venetian Macao, with 3,000 suites, 840 gaming tables, and a recreation of Venice's Grand Canal (complete with gondolas) inside the building, is the world's largest single-structure casino hotel. The Galaxy Macau, Studio City Macau, and MGM Cotai are equally extravagant neighbours. In contrast, Taipa Village — a few minutes from the Cotai Strip — preserves the atmosphere of Macao's pre-casino past: narrow lanes lined with pastel-coloured colonial buildings, Portuguese restaurants serving bacalhau and Portuguese custard tarts (pastéis de nata), and Chinese temples dedicated to Taoist deities. Macao's cuisine — a unique fusion of Cantonese Chinese and Portuguese cooking — is perhaps the most distinctive and complex culinary tradition of any city its size in the world.
