Mobile Networks & Coverage in the DR Congo

Lubumbashi, the DRC's second-largest city and the mining capital of Katanga Province, has 4G coverage in the city centre, the university area and the main mining company zones. Goma, on Lake Kivu near the Rwandan border in the east, has reasonable 4G connectivity in the city centre, though the volatile security situation in North Kivu makes coverage advisory a lower priority than safety planning.

Outside the major cities, mobile coverage in the DRC is limited and often only 3G or 2G. The Congo Basin — the world's second-largest rainforest, covering a vast area of the country's interior — has virtually no mobile coverage. Kisangani, Mbandaka and Kananga have some coverage in their city centres; smaller towns and rural areas have very limited to no signal. The Virunga National Park, the Okapi Wildlife Reserve and other protected areas in the interior have no mobile connectivity. Satellite communication devices are essential for any travel outside the main urban centres.

Kinshasa, Virunga & the Congo River

The Democratic Republic of the Congo — formerly Zaire — is the largest country in sub-Saharan Africa by area, covering 2.34 million square kilometres and home to approximately 100 million people, making it the most populous francophone country in the world. The country sits at the heart of Central Africa, sharing borders with nine countries: Republic of the Congo, Central African Republic, South Sudan, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Zambia and Angola. The Congo River — the world's second-largest river by discharge and the deepest river on earth — flows through the country in a vast arc, defining the country's geography and providing the primary transport artery through much of the interior. The capital Kinshasa sits on the south bank of the Congo River at Stanley Pool (Pool Malebo), directly across from Brazzaville, the capital of the Republic of the Congo — the only instance in the world of two national capitals facing each other across a river. Kinshasa is a megacity of 15+ million people, a chaotic, creative and intensely energetic place that is the cultural and economic capital of Central Africa, home to the Congolese rumba (recognised on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list), the Grand Marché, the Académie des Beaux-Arts and an extraordinary art scene that produces some of the most internationally celebrated artists in Africa.

Virunga National Park in the far east of the DRC along the Ugandan and Rwandan border is Africa's oldest national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, covering 7,900 square kilometres of extraordinary volcanic landscape, montane rainforest and savannah. The park is home to approximately half of the world's remaining mountain gorilla population (shared with the Bwindi and Volcanoes parks of Uganda and Rwanda), as well as forest elephants, hippos, lions, chimpanzees and over 700 species of birds. The Nyiragongo stratovolcano (3,470 m), accessible on a guided overnight hike from the park's Goma sector, has one of the world's largest and most active lava lakes — a pool of glowing magma in the volcano's summit crater visible from Goma on clear nights. The 2021 eruption of Nyiragongo caused significant damage to the surrounding area and the temporary evacuation of Goma. The Luki Biosphere Reserve, the Kahuzi-Biéga National Park (home to eastern lowland gorillas) and the remote Garamba National Park in the north-east are among the DRC's other significant protected areas.

The Congo River and its tributaries define travel in the DRC's interior. The journey by riverboat from Kinshasa to Kisangani — roughly 1,750 kilometres upstream through the Congo Basin rainforest — is one of the world's great river voyages: a trip of two to three weeks aboard a slow-moving barge convoy carrying cargo, traders, fishermen and travellers, passing through riverbank villages accessible by no other means of transport. The Lola ya Bonobo sanctuary near Kinshasa is home to rescued bonobos — a great ape species found only in the DRC south of the Congo River — and offers one of the world's few opportunities to observe these remarkable animals at close range. The Kongolo falls, the Boyoma Falls (formerly Stanley Falls) near Kisangani, and the Crystal Mountains near the coast are among the country's natural wonders.
