Diani, south of Mombasa, rolls out powder sand and kitesurfing lagoons; Watamu pairs a marine park with sea-turtle hatcheries; and Lamu — a UNESCO-listed old town with no cars, only donkeys and dhows — preserves Swahili life largely as it looked centuries ago. Mombasa's Old Town and Fort Jesus (built by the Portuguese in 1593) reward a wander before the beach.
