Mobile Networks & Coverage in Mauritius

Mauritius has an excellent mobile network for its size, served by three operators: Orange Mauritius, Emtel, and Cellplus Mobile Communications (operating under the MTML brand). Our eSIM connects to Cellplus Mobile Mauritius, delivering solid 4G LTE coverage across the entire island. Port Louis, the capital and main business hub, has strong 4G throughout. The northern tourist belt — Grand Baie, Trou aux Biches, and Mont Choisy — enjoys excellent 4G connectivity, as do the eastern beaches of Belle Mare and Trou d'Eau Douce. The western tourist coast (Flic en Flac, Black River) and the iconic Le Morne Peninsula in the southwest are also well covered. The Black River Gorges National Park in the island's interior has signal in accessible areas near the gorge viewpoints, with weaker signal in the deeper forest. The Rodrigues Island (part of Mauritius, 650 km northeast of the main island) has more limited 4G coverage, primarily in Port Mathurin and the main town areas. Agalega Islands (far north) are largely off the grid. For the main island, however, coverage is comprehensive and reliable for travellers.

Given Mauritius's excellent network coverage and small size, offline maps are rarely necessary but can be useful for hiking trails in Black River Gorges and the remote interior.

Port Louis, Beaches & Mauritius's Cultural Mosaic

Mauritius, officially the Republic of Mauritius, is an island nation in the Indian Ocean, located about 2,000 km off the southeast coast of Africa. The main island covers 1,865 km² and has a population of approximately 1.3 million. Mauritius is renowned globally for its exceptional beaches, luxury resorts, and astonishing cultural diversity: the population is a harmonious mixture of South Asian (Indo-Mauritian, predominantly of Indian origin), Creole (of African and Malagasy descent), Franco-Mauritian (of French origin), and Sino-Mauritian communities, reflecting the island's complex colonial history under the Dutch, French, and British. The island gained independence on 12 March 1968 and became a republic in 1992. Mauritius has achieved one of Africa's highest per capita incomes and strongest human development indices, driven by tourism, financial services, textile manufacturing, and sugar production.

Port Louis, the capital city, is a vibrant cosmopolitan port with a fascinating mix of colonial architecture, Asian temples, mosques, and churches. The Central Market is one of the most atmospheric markets in the Indian Ocean region, overflowing with exotic spices, tropical fruits, and street food. The Caudan Waterfront offers upscale shopping and seafood restaurants overlooking the harbour. The Aapravasi Ghat in Port Louis — the first immigration depot in the British Empire where indentured labourers from India first landed — is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Île aux Cerfs in the east is perhaps Mauritius's most photogenic beach destination: a palm-fringed white sand cay surrounded by turquoise lagoon, accessible by boat from Trou d'Eau Douce. Le Morne Brabant, the dramatic basalt monolith on the southwestern peninsula that once served as a refuge for escaped slaves and is now also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, provides excellent hiking with panoramic views over the lagoon.

The underwater world around Mauritius is outstanding. The island is surrounded by a coral reef enclosing a remarkable lagoon, with diving sites featuring underwater waterfalls (optical illusions of sand cascading off the continental shelf), whale shark sightings, and vibrant coral gardens. Chamarel in the south is famous for its Seven Coloured Earths — a geological phenomenon of naturally coloured volcanic soil in shades of red, brown, violet, green, blue, purple, and yellow — and the Chamarel Waterfall, the highest on the island at around 100 metres. The Domaine de l'Eureka in Moka, a beautifully restored 19th-century Creole mansion surrounded by botanical gardens, provides a window into the island's colonial sugar plantation era.

eSIM vs Roaming in Mauritius

Mauritius is outside the EU roaming zone, and European visitors typically face costly international roaming charges. Many European carriers treat Mauritius as an international destination with daily data fees of €8–15, making even a short Indian Ocean holiday expensive for smartphone-dependent travellers. A Mauritius eSIM from €6.24 on Cellplus's 4G network provides a full prepaid data plan at a fraction of roaming costs — perfect for a beach holiday where you'll want to use maps, social media, and messaging freely.

Our Mauritius eSIM activates instantly via QR code sent to your email — no SIM card hunt at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport. Your home SIM stays active for calls while your Mauritius eSIM handles all your data needs, from navigating Port Louis markets to finding the best snorkelling spots off Île aux Cerfs.
