The Republic of Congo — also known as Congo-Brazzaville to distinguish it from its larger neighbour — is a country in Central Africa covering 342,000 square kilometres, bordered by Gabon, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Angolan exclave of Cabinda. With a population of approximately 6 million people, it is one of the most urbanised countries in Africa: around 70% of the population lives in cities, primarily in Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire. Brazzaville, the capital since French colonial times, sits directly across the Congo River from Kinshasa — the only place in the world where two national capitals face each other across a navigable river at such close range. The city has a distinctly French-colonial character: the Avenue de l'Indépendance and the Boulevard du Maréchal Lyautey retain elegant older building stock; the Basilique Sainte-Anne du Congo on the hilltop above the river is a landmark visible from Kinshasa. The Marché Total — one of Brazzaville's main markets — and the arts and crafts market of Poto-Poto are the most atmospheric shopping experiences in the capital. The Musée National du Congo in the former presidential palace houses archaeological and ethnological collections.

The northern half of the Republic of Congo is covered by one of the most pristine sections of the Congo Basin rainforest, with two UNESCO World Heritage-adjacent national parks. The Odzala-Kokoua National Park, covering 13,500 km², is one of Africa's oldest protected areas and one of the most important strongholds for western lowland gorillas — with an estimated population of several thousand, it has one of the densest concentrations of western lowland gorillas in the world. The park also supports forest elephants, buffalo, bongo antelope, dwarf crocodiles and an extraordinary diversity of birdlife. Access is by charter flight from Brazzaville to the park's airstrips (around 500 km north), or by road through difficult forest tracks. The Nouabalé-Ndoki National Park in the far north, near the Cameroon and Central African Republic borders, is jointly managed with the adjacent Lobéké National Park in Cameroon under a tri-national conservation agreement and protects one of the most remote and biologically intact forest ecosystems in Central Africa.

Pointe-Noire on the Atlantic coast is a very different city from Brazzaville: an oil boomtown with a busy commercial port, beaches that stretch north and south of the city, and a booming restaurant scene supported by the expatriate oil industry. La Côte Sauvage north of Pointe-Noire — a series of dramatic beaches backed by cliffs — offers surfing, fishing and entirely uncrowded swimming. The Congo Ocean Railway — one of Africa's most historically significant colonial engineering projects — runs between Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire through difficult terrain; the construction between 1921 and 1934 cost the lives of an estimated 17,000 workers. Today the railway is the main transport link between the coast and the capital, running through forested plateaux and river gorges.
