Luang Prabang is the jewel of mainland Southeast Asia — a UNESCO World Heritage town where 33 gilded temples share a peninsula with French-colonial villas at the confluence of the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers. Rise before dawn for the tak bat, the silent procession of hundreds of saffron-robed monks collecting alms — observe respectfully from across the street. By day: the Royal Palace Museum, Wat Xieng Thong's mosaic Tree of Life, and the 328 steps up Mount Phousi for sunset over the Mekong. The essential day trip is Kuang Si — a three-tiered waterfall cascading through turquoise travertine pools you can swim in, with a bear rescue sanctuary at its base. Evenings belong to the night market and, for the brave, a shot of lao-lao rice whisky.

Vang Vieng, once a backpacker party town, has grown up into one of Asia's best adventure bases: a karst landscape of limestone towers rising from rice paddies, explored by hot-air balloon at dawn, kayak and tube on the Nam Song river, or scooter between blue lagoons and caves — Tham Phu Kham's lagoon and the vast Tham Chang cavern are the classics. The viewpoint hikes (Nam Xay, Pha Ngern) reward sweaty climbs with postcard panoramas. Vientiane, the sleepy riverside capital, deserves a day: the golden Pha That Luang stupa — the national symbol — the Patuxai victory arch, and Buddha Park's surreal sculpture garden, then sunset beers on the Mekong promenade facing Thailand.

The deep south is Laos at its most horizontal. Si Phan Don — the "4,000 Islands" — is where the Mekong spreads eleven kilometres wide and shatters into an archipelago; travellers settle into hammocks on Don Det or Don Khon, cycle between rice paddies and French railway relics, and kayak to spot the rare Irrawaddy dolphins near the Cambodian border. Nearby, the Khone Phapheng falls are the largest waterfall in Southeast Asia by volume — the reason the Mekong was never navigable to China. The Bolaven Plateau above Pakse adds a cool-climate loop of coffee plantations and waterfalls, including the twin plunge of Tad Fane dropping 120 metres into jungle.
