North, Khövsgöl Nuur — "the Blue Pearl", Mongolia's sacred lake holding 2% of the world's fresh water — mirrors larch forests near the reindeer-herding Tsaatan people of the taiga. West, the Altai peaks host Kazakh eagle hunters; the Golden Eagle Festival each October in Bayan-Ölgii is among the most photogenic events on the planet. And everywhere in July, Naadam explodes — wrestling, horse races over 25 kilometres ridden by children, and archery: the "three manly games" that have run since Chinggis Khaan's musters.

Ulaanbaatar, home to half the nation, is the world's coldest capital and its most surprising: the giant Chinggis Khaan equestrian statue (40 metres of stainless steel) rides the steppe an hour east, Gandan monastery's 26-metre gilded Buddha survived the purges, the National Museum condenses the empire, and a young, cashmere-clad generation fills craft-beer bars and galleries between Soviet blocks. Gorkhi-Terelj National Park sits close enough for a day trip — Turtle Rock, meditation temples, ger camps under granite outcrops — which makes it the gentlest introduction to a country that otherwise demands, and rewards, real expedition spirit.
