Mobile Networks & Coverage in Nepal

e1sim Nepal plans run on Ncell — the country's leading private operator, with 4G LTE across the Kathmandu Valley, Pokhara, Chitwan, Lumbini and the entire Terai lowland belt, plus the towns and trailheads that anchor the trekking industry. In the cities, speeds are solid enough for video calls, streaming and uploading mountain panoramas.

In the Himalaya, be realistic: this is the highest terrain on earth. Ncell covers the lower Annapurna and Everest trail sections — Lukla, Namche Bazaar and stretches of the classic routes have usable signal, and Everest Base Camp itself has seen 4G since 2010 — but between villages and in high side-valleys (Manang, upper Mustang, Langtang after the ridge) expect long dead zones. Trekking lodges sell Wi-Fi vouchers (Everest Link cards in the Khumbu) as backup. Download offline maps and your permits before leaving Kathmandu or Pokhara.

Kathmandu, Pokhara & the Roof of the World

The Kathmandu Valley is a UNESCO World Heritage Site seven times over — a medieval universe of pagoda temples, hidden courtyards and living goddesses. Kathmandu's Durbar Square and the labyrinth of Thamel anchor the capital; Swayambhunath, the "Monkey Temple", watches the valley from its hilltop with painted Buddha eyes; Boudhanath's great white stupa — one of the largest in the world — draws Tibetan pilgrims circling with prayer wheels at dusk; and Pashupatinath on the Bagmati river is Nepal's holiest Hindu site, where cremation ghats burn day and night. The neighbouring royal cities of Patan and Bhaktapur preserve entire medieval streetscapes — Bhaktapur's pottery squares and 55-Window Palace feel unchanged in five centuries.

Pokhara is the adventure capital and the country's exhale: a lakeside town beneath the Annapurna massif, where the perfect pyramid of Machapuchare — the "Fishtail", a peak so sacred climbing it is forbidden — reflects in Phewa Lake. Paragliders launch from Sarangkot at dawn (Pokhara is one of the world's top three commercial paragliding sites), the World Peace Pagoda gleams across the water, and the town serves as trailhead for everything from the three-day Poon Hill sunrise trek to the full Annapurna Circuit. The classic Everest experience begins with the white-knuckle mountain flight to Lukla and climbs through Sherpa country to Namche Bazaar — the highest town with espresso machines and gear shops on earth — en route to Base Camp at 5,364 metres.

The Terai lowlands complete the picture: Chitwan National Park protects one of Asia's last strongholds of the greater one-horned rhinoceros — over 700 of them — plus Bengal tigers, gharial crocodiles and wild elephants, explored by jeep and dugout canoe. Lumbini, the birthplace of the Buddha in 623 BC, gathers monasteries built by two dozen Buddhist nations around the sacred garden and the Maya Devi temple. And everywhere in Nepal, dal bhat — the twice-daily rice-and-lentil ritual — comes with free refills and the trekking mantra: "Dal bhat power, 24 hour."

eSIM vs Roaming in Nepal

Nepal is one of the most expensive roaming destinations on earth for Western carriers — €10–15 per day is typical and per-megabyte rates can be predatory. EU "Roam Like at Home" does not apply. A prepaid e1sim plan costs less than a single day of roaming and activates by QR code before you land in Kathmandu.

Buying a local SIM in Nepal means a passport photocopy, a passport photo and a registration form at the airport counter or an operator shop — manageable, but not what you want after a long flight before the Himalaya. An eSIM skips the queue entirely: order online, scan the QR from your email, and be connected at arrivals. Plans are data-only — calls run over WhatsApp, which is how Nepali trekking agencies, guides and guesthouses communicate anyway.
