Tanzania holds an almost unfair share of Africa's icons. The Serengeti is the stage for the Great Migration's full annual loop — two million wildebeest and zebra circling endless plains whose Maasai name means exactly that, with river crossings in the north (June–October gray season on the Mara River) and mass calving in the southern short-grass plains each February, when predator action peaks. Next door, the Ngorongoro Crater packs some 25,000 large animals into a collapsed volcano's 260-square-kilometre floor — the closest thing on earth to a natural wildlife amphitheatre, with black rhino among the crater's residents. The northern circuit rounds out with Tarangire's baobabs and elephant herds and Lake Manyara's tree-climbing lions, all within a day's drive of Arusha.

Above it all stands Kilimanjaro — at 5,895 metres the highest mountain in Africa and the tallest free-standing mountain on the planet, climbable without ropes or crampons by anyone with a week and stubbornness. Routes like Machame and Lemosho climb from rainforest (colobus monkeys overhead) through moorland and alpine desert to the arctic summit crater, where Uhuru Peak's sign at dawn is one of travel's great hard-earned photographs. Those who prefer their altitude gentler hike Mount Meru or the Usambara Mountains' green villages; the truly intrepid head south-west to Mahale, where chimpanzees live on a lake-shore mountain reachable only by boat, or to Ruaha and Nyerere (Selous) — southern parks with Serengeti-scale wildlife and a fraction of the vehicles.

Then Zanzibar rewrites the trip's final act. Stone Town's UNESCO-listed maze of carved doors, bazaars and rooftop terraces distils a thousand years of Swahili, Arab, Persian and Indian trade — spice-farm tours explain why they called these the Spice Islands, and Freddie Mercury's birthplace adds a pop-culture footnote. North-coast Nungwi and Kendwa serve sunset beaches with barely any tide; east-coast Paje is a kitesurfing mecca over a turquoise lagoon; and the Mnemba atoll delivers snorkelling with dolphins. Jozani forest's endemic red colobus monkeys and a seafood curry on a rooftop as the muezzin calls — few countries close a safari this well.
